The most influential figures in the Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan. Professor Cheng developed his own style of Tai Chi known as the Cheng Man-ching Form, which is the main focus of Far Mountain Tai Chi in Glasgow.
The school, formerly known as Autumn River Tai Chi, is dedicated to teaching the principles of Tai Chi Chuan with a focus on the Cheng Man-ching Form, Push Hands, Sword Form, and Fencing. They believe that Tai Chi is a practise that unifies the body, mind, and spirit, leading to various benefits such as improved health and well-being, peace of mind, martial ability, and spiritual growth.
Far Mountain Tai Chi offers a range of classes at The Andalus located at 213 New City Road in Glasgow. On Tuesdays, they have an Advanced Form Revision & Principles class from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, followed by a Sword Class focusing on Sword Form & Fencing from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Wednesdays are dedicated to Beginner's Form, starting from October 4th, 2023, for complete beginners from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Thursdays offer an Intermediate Form class from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, followed by Push Hands & Fencing sessions from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
The teaching approach at Far Mountain Tai Chi emphasises the importance of understanding the principles of Yin and Yang, the fundamental energies of the Universe, as well as the physical manifestations of Tai Chi Chuan, known as Chuan. They believe that through the practise of Tai Chi, one can achieve a natural state of relaxation, enhance body awareness, and develop the body's natural energy called Chi.
The school also places importance on Push Hands, a practise that teaches sensitivity to others' actions and energies and how to effectively deal with them without compromising the Tai Chi principles. They believe that the Form teaches students about themselves, while Push Hands teaches them how to interact with others and the world.
In terms of Tai Chi styles, Far Mountain Tai Chi primarily focuses on the Cheng Man-ching Form. However, they acknowledge that there are several styles taught in the West, including Wu, Chen, and Yang style. Yang style, popularised by Professor Cheng Man-ching, is particularly prevalent in Europe and North America due to its accessibility and popularity.
Professor Cheng Man-ching is highly regarded as a modern Tai Chi master, having studied under the tutelage of Yang Cheng-fu. His relaxed attitude and great skill continue to influence his students even after his passing. Far Mountain Tai Chi aims to carry on his legacy by teaching his modified version of the Yang style, known as the Cheng Man-ching Form.
Far Mountain Tai Chi welcomes students of all levels, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners. They strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where individuals can develop their Tai Chi skills and experience the numerous benefits of this ancient practise.
