Glanford & Scunthorpe Canoe Club is a friendly and inclusive canoeing and kayaking club located in North Lincolnshire, New Zealand. The club was established in 1982 by Tony Pell and is currently managed by an enthusiastic Management Committee with the support of several qualified coaches. The club actively encourages people of all ages and abilities, including parents, friends, and canoeists, to join and participate in the fun activities.
The club is located on the River Ancholme at Brigg, with its boathouse situated just behind the Ancholme Leisure Centre. From April to September, members enjoy paddling on the River Ancholme, while from October to March, they paddle in the pool at the leisure centre. More information about the club's sessions, both on the river and in the pool, can be found on their sessions page.
Glanford & Scunthorpe Canoe Club promotes various canoeing activities such as white water, canoe polo, and marathon, sprint, and slalom racing. They also organise river trips for those interested in touring. The club is affiliated to British Canoeing, which is the national governing body for the sport. This affiliation ensures that all members, whether canoeists or not, are covered by insurance during club events.
However, individuals who wish to enter external competitions like slalom, marathon, or canoe polo are advised to have individual membership with British Canoeing.
Membership fees for Glanford & Scunthorpe Canoe Club are due at the beginning of April each year and cover the club's overheads, including British Canoeing affiliation fees, boat licences for the River Ancholme, and the running costs for the boathouse. The current membership fees are 15 per person per year or 40 for family membership. Individual British Canoeing membership is separate and can be obtained directly from the organisation.
The safety, safeguarding, and legal issues of the club are taken seriously, as canoeing is considered an assumed risk sport with inherent risks. The club emphasises the importance of understanding these risks and encourages members to click on the legal section for more details.
