Godalming Chess Club, located in Godalming, has been providing chess enthusiasts of all ages with a friendly environment to indulge in their passion for the game for over 70 years. Whether you're a social player or more serious about chess, Godalming Chess Club welcomes you.
The club takes pride in its rich history, having been formed on December 13th, 1948, with the first meeting held on January 4th, 1949. Over the years, the club has participated in the local Surrey Borders League and achieved notable success, winning various competitions such as the Bell Trophy in 2014 and 2022, Division 2 titles in 1980, 1993, and 1998, Division 3 titles in 2004, 2014, 2015, and 2016, and many more.
Godalming Chess Club has had the honour of having esteemed players, including Elaine Pritchard, a child prodigy who was the world junior champion in the 1930s and a five-time British Ladies Champion. Elaine Pritchard was long regarded as the club's strongest player.
The club prides itself on being inclusive and welcoming players of all abilities. They provide opportunities for both social and competitive chess. In addition to entering five teams in the Surrey Borders League, the club organises various internal events. The Clarke Cup, which is the Club Championship open to all members, and the Elaine Pritchard Trophy, open to players graded under 125, are the two main internal tournaments.
To keep the atmosphere lively, the club holds two rapid play tournaments throughout the season. The Stace Cup is held at Christmas along with a social evening, while the Henry D'Oyly Bernard Cup, a handicap rapid play event, is held at the end of the season.
Meetings take place every Wednesday at St Marks Community Centre on Franklyn Road, Godalming. The 2023/24 season runs from September 13th, 2023, to April 24th, 2024, with meetings starting at 7:15PM. The annual membership fee is 70, which covers all Border League fees, competition entry fees, and refreshments. Membership of the English Chess Federation is payable separately.
