About

John Henry is an experienced instructor at Heights Tai Chi. He began his journey in Chen Style Tai Chi with the Chinese Internal Arts Association in 1999 and has since honed his skills by attending various classes with renowned masters Chen Xiao Wang and Chen Yingjun during their visits to the UK. John is passionate about sharing his knowledge and expertise, helping students to experience the many benefits of Tai Chi.

Classes at Heights Tai Chi are held weekly in Caversham, offering a comprehensive two-hour session. The first hour focuses on Tai Chi and Chi Kung exercises, while the second hour covers the Tai Chi form. Students have the flexibility to attend either one or both hours, depending on their preferences.

Chen Style Tai Chi, often considered the oldest of the main styles taught today, originated in the Chen Family Village in China over 300 years ago. It is currently taught worldwide by the 20th generation of the Chen Family. The practise of Tai Chi aims to harmonise the mind, body, and energy, utilising gentle, flowing movements that originate from the body's centre. These movements are combined with principles from Chinese systems of internal energy, Yin/Yang theory, and ancient Chinese philosophy.

The practise of Tai Chi encompasses the development of “chi,” the body's internal energy, and the facilitation of its flow throughout the body. This is achieved through soft and gentle movements, typically focusing on spiralling energy known as “Silk Reeling” energy in Chen Style Tai Chi. These principles are further incorporated into a set pattern of movements, known as the Tai Chi form, which becomes a continuous and flowing movement during practise.

The benefits of Tai Chi are diverse and extend to various aspects of health and well-being. Tai Chi's gentle yet deep internal movements help exercise the joints and muscles, promoting natural and healthy movement. The NHS recognises Chi Kung, a component of Tai Chi, for its wide range of health benefits, including rehabilitation, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and improved immune function.

Relaxation is central to the practise of Tai Chi, fostering a sense of calmness in the mind and allowing individuals to release the tensions and stresses accumulated in modern life. The focus on balance within Tai Chi also contributes to the prevention of falls and reduces stress on the body's joints. Moreover, Tai Chi enhances energy levels and revitalises individuals by focusing on the body's chi.

While martial arts aspects are not currently taught at Heights Tai Chi, the movements and principles learned serve as a solid foundation for those interested in further exploration within the complete martial arts system of Tai Chi.

Tai Chi is suitable for individuals of various abilities and needs. Exercises can be adapted for sitting or standing positions, making it accessible to almost anyone who wants to practise. However, individuals with pre-existing medical conditions are encouraged to inform the instructor via email prior to attending classes to discuss the best approach. It is also advisable for those with serious medical conditions to consult with their doctors before joining Tai Chi.

Instructor John Henry brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Heights Tai Chi.
