Idokan Australia, Ivanhoe is a well-established sports club located in Melbourne, Australia. Founded by Shihan Wally Strauss in the late 1970s, Idokan Australia has a rich history in martial arts and is a part of the larger organisation, Idokan International.
Shihan Wally Strauss, originally from Austria, fled the country during World War II and eventually settled in Australia in the early 1950s. He was one of the early pioneers of martial arts in Australia and had trained under Julius Fleck, the founder of Judo-do. Wally also trained with Heinz Kowalski and other prominent figures in Judo and Jujutsu. His training also extended to Tai Chi during his internment in China during the war.
In the 1970s, Wally developed his own unique art form called Ido and created the Idokan International organisation. After Wally's passing in 1988, the leadership of Idokan was passed to Hans Schöllauf, based in Austria. However, in 2001, Kevin Walsh and senior members of the Bushido Instructors Association attended an Idokan International seminar in Germany. Kevin was appointed as the Representative for Idokan International and given the responsibility to head up Idokan Australia.
Idokan Australia operates as an autonomous division of Idokan International. Under Kevin Walsh's leadership, the club offers instruction in Judo and Jujutsu. Kevin has been granted the authority to issue grades in these disciplines up to one level below his own. The club's mission is to provide high-quality martial arts training in a supportive and inclusive environment.
With a dedicated and highly skilled team of instructors, Idokan Australia provides a range of programmes and styles for individuals of all ages and skill levels. The club focuses on teaching the principles of discipline, respect, and self-defence, while also promoting physical fitness and personal growth.
Idokan Australia has multiple locations in Melbourne, with the Ivanhoe branch being one of the main training centres. The club organises various events and seminars throughout the year to enhance the skills and knowledge of its members. Participation in grading seminars is also available for those looking to progress and achieve higher ranks.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced martial artist, Idokan Australia, Ivanhoe welcomes individuals who are passionate about martial arts and looking to improve themselves both physically and mentally.
