Joannas Dance Academy

Joanna's Dance Academy is a friendly dance school located in Burton-on-Trent, New Zealand. The academy was founded in 2021 by principal Jo Walker when she took over the Pat Miller School of Dance after Pat's retirement. Offering a range of dance classes for children aged 3 to adults, Joanna's Dance Academy is a proud member of the National Association Teachers of Dancing (NATD) and the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD).

At Joanna's Dance Academy, all teaching staff are fully qualified with either NATD or RAD and hold DBS, First Aid, and Safeguarding certificates. The academy is well-known in the local area for its friendly and caring approach, where children are encouraged to have fun, learn new skills, build confidence, and make new friends. There is no pressure for students to pursue dance as a career; rather, the focus is on providing an enjoyable experience for all abilities.

Joanna's Dance Academy also offers after-school dance clubs in local schools, providing an opportunity for children to further explore their passion for dance. The academy strives to cater to the diverse interests and needs of its students, offering classes in a variety of dance styles such as Freestyle Disco, Lyrical, Contemporary, Jazz Technique, and Ballet.

For children aged between 4 and 8, the academy offers Rainbow classes, where students learn basic ballet steps to build strength and technique while also enjoying fun freestyle disco dance routines. These classes prepare students for their NATD Rainbow exams, where they receive a different colour of the rainbow after each successful examination. Rainbow classes are held on Saturday mornings at Branston Village Hall, providing a great starting point for children's dance journey and helping them build confidence.

Freestyle Disco classes at Joanna's Dance Academy combine elements of ballet and jazz, allowing dancers to learn basic ballet terminology and technique while also mastering fun and upbeat dance routines set to modern music. These classes are available for all ages, starting from 8 years old and continuing up to adults, with classes held on different days and at various locations in Burton-on-Trent.

Ballet, a theatrical style of dance that focuses on posture, technique, alignment, and grace, is taught by a registered RAD teacher at Joanna's Dance Academy. Classes for children aged between 4 and 18 are held on Thursday evenings at the dance studio on Wharf Road, providing a comprehensive ballet education for students of all ages.

Lyrical dance, a graceful and soft style set to slower music, is also offered at Joanna's Dance Academy. In these classes, students not only work on their ballet technique but also develop skills such as leaps and pirouettes. Lyrical classes are available for children aged 8-12 on Monday nights and for students aged 13 and over on Wednesday nights at the Wharf Road dance studio.

Contemporary dance, which combines elements of modern dance and classical ballet, is another popular style of dance taught at Joanna's Dance Academy. In contemporary classes, students explore the works of renowned choreographers such as Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and Jose Limon. These classes focus on contact work, release technique, fall, and recovery, floorwork, improvisation, and creative freedom. Contemporary dance is a must for anyone seeking to expand their dance repertoire and further their dance journey.
