Lake Canobolas Reserve, located in Nashdale, is a stunning swimming lake and park that serves as a popular tourist attraction in the area. Situated at the foot of Mt Canobolas, the lake offers a variety of activities that change with the seasons, making it a versatile destination for both locals and visitors.
The lake is fed by Molong Creek, which receives water from melting snow and rain that falls on Mt Canobolas and the surrounding Towac Valley. Over the years, extensive rehabilitation work has been done to restore the lake environs, resulting in abundant bird life and a habitat for various species of water fowl and native fauna. Visitors may even have the chance to spot a platypus surfacing on the still waters after diving for prey or catch a glimpse of an echidna or wallaby.
Lake Canobolas has a rich history as well. It was initially constructed in 1918 as Meadow Creek Reservoir to provide water to the town of Orange through a pipeline. However, by 1957, the lake was not able to meet the growing city's water supply needs, leading to the exploration of alternative sources. The pipeline, originally used to supply water to Orange, now brings potable water supplies back to the lake and also serves several rural residents along the way.
For visitors looking to enjoy refreshments or a meal, the Lakeside Kiosk & Café is conveniently located on the western side of the lake. While the current offering is limited to takeaway, the café has plans to expand and welcome guests for dine-in service once lockdown restrictions are lifted. Detailed information and current opening hours can be found on the Lakeside Kiosk & Café's Facebook page.
Lake Canobolas Reserve also boasts a brand new playground on the eastern shores of the lake, providing an additional source of fun for visitors, especially families with children. The playground is part of a $1. 3 million upgrade project that aims to enhance the park's facilities and amenities.
Visitors can enjoy their time at Lake Canobolas every day of the year from early morning until dusk. Picnic tables and toilet facilities are available for convenience, and dogs are allowed in the park as long as they are kept on a leash.
Lake Canobolas Reserve is proud to acknowledge its location within the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri Nation. The Orange City Council recognises and respects the Wiradjuri people's custodianship of these lands for over 40,000 years and extends its gratitude to the Elders of the Wiradjuri Nation past, present, and future.
