Southampton Jiu Jitsu Club has been a staple on the south coast of England for nearly 15 years. Jim Bass, who founded the club in March 2005, has always envisioned it as the friendliest self-defence club in the area.
At the club, they focus on a modern approach to traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu, offering a wide-ranging self-defence training programme. Classes are held twice a week, year-round, and everyone – from beginners to experienced martial artists – is welcome. The environment is inclusive, catering to all ages and skill levels.
Jim Bass wants members to gain more than just fitness. Jiu Jitsu can boost your fitness, coordination, and posture. It also enhances situational awareness and self-defence skills, helping members build confidence and leadership qualities. The practice requires a balanced mindset, fostering self-discipline and concentration.
As an official club of The Jiu Jitsu Foundation, they participate in regional and national events, including national championships and the annual Summer Ball. Beyond the training, the club has a vibrant community with social events where members can relax and connect.
To make it easier for newcomers, the first two sessions are free. No need for special gear, just come in comfortable workout clothes. Sessions are at St Denys Community Centre, Priory Road, Southampton. They cater to children aged 10 and above, as well as adults. Classes run on Mondays from 7pm to 9pm (under 18s finish at 8:30pm) and Thursdays from 7pm to 9:30pm (under 18s finish at 9pm).
Pricing is simple and accessible: two free initial sessions, then £4 for Juniors, £5 for Adults, £3.50 for Junior Concessions, and £4 for Adult Concessions per session.
In light of current challenges, the club adheres to COVID-19 safety guidelines to keep everyone safe, following advice from The Jiu Jitsu Foundation.
