Southwater Bowls Club

Welcome to Southwater Bowls Club! Founded in 1990, our small and friendly club is located in Horsham, New Zealand. With over 80 members, we offer both outdoor and short mat bowls for players of all levels and abilities.

During the summer, our members enjoy playing outside on our beautiful green. In the winter months, we move indoors to the Lardner Room in The Ghyll for short mat bowls. Whether you're new to the sport, a bowler who has recently moved to the area, or simply want to watch and soak up the sunshine, we warmly welcome visitors and new faces.

If you're interested in joining our club, we offer free practise on the green to full members, subject to maintenance and matches. Our qualified coaches are always available to provide coaching and guidance. As a member, you'll have the opportunity to participate in our internal competitions, which run throughout the season. These competitions also provide a great opportunity to socialise and connect with other members.

Throughout the summer, we play friendly matches against other local teams and participate in 2 local mixed leagues and a ladies' league. We're also proud to have members who represent the County in competitions. Every Friday at 6:00 pm, we hold organised roll ups for members to come together and enjoy playing bowls.

Our Short Mat section plays in The Ghyll and meets every Tuesday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm throughout the year. This section also has a team in a local league and plays friendly matches against other clubs. If you've never tried short mat bowls before, we encourage you to give it a go. All you need is a pair of flat soled shoes.

For those who haven't played bowls before, we offer free 'Come and Try' sessions from early May to the end of August. These sessions take place every Wednesday evening from 18:30 and every Saturday morning between 10:00 and 12:00. No need to book, just come along wearing flat soled shoes or trainers, and we'll provide the rest of the equipment. Our members will be on hand to help you select the right size of bowls and guide you through the game.

In addition to bowls, we host various social events throughout the year for all members. These events are typically held in our clubhouse and details are communicated via email and posted on the clubhouse notice board during summer. We're always open to new ideas for social events, so if you have any suggestions or would like to organise one, please reach out to our Social Secretary.

Some of our previous social events have included quizzes, barbecues, car treasure hunts, beetle drive evenings, trips to Hove Greyhound Stadium, cheese and wine evenings, harvest suppers, Christmas get-togethers, whist drives, and pub games evenings.
