Stamford & Peterborough Junior Roller Derby is a roller skating rink and sports complex located in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Our facility, known as Borderville Sports Hall, provides a fun and exciting environment for children and adolescents to participate in the sport of roller derby.
Junior roller derby is a modified version of the popular contact sport played by adults. It involves two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. The objective of the game is for the jammer, designated by both teams, to score points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams simultaneously play offence and defence, making it an exhilarating and fast-paced sport.
Our roller derby club is open to everyone under the age of 18, regardless of gender, body size, or fitness level. We believe in inclusivity and creating a safe space for all participants. Adults who are interested in roller derby can join the adult roller derby league (www. bbrd.
uk).
Safety is our number one priority at Stamford & Peterborough Junior Roller Derby. We have different skill levels based on skating ability rather than age, ensuring that everyone can participate safely. Intro skaters focus on learning basic skating skills and the fundamentals of derby without playing matches. Skill Level I skaters are starting to scrimmage and learn game play, while Skill Level II skaters engage in pushing contact.
Skaters who pass the Skill Level III Assessment are able to participate in full-contact games and tournaments.
To participate in our roller derby club, members will need roller skates. We currently do not have skates available for hire, so members are responsible for obtaining their own skates. We recommend “Quad” roller skates, not blade or inline skates, as they are appropriate for roller derby. Additionally, we require different levels of protective gear depending on skill level.
Intro skaters only require knee pads and wrist guards, while members at Skill Levels I, II, and III should also have elbow pads, mouth guards, and helmets.
Wearing suitable sportswear and bringing a drink to each session is important for all members. We strive to make roller derby as affordable as possible, and we are constantly working on improving accessibility to the sport.
