The origins of the Tairua Pauanui Sports Fishing Club can be traced back to the 1970s when it started as a weigh station for the Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club. However, in 1980, Tairua local Viv McNabb recognised the potential of the region and proposed the establishment of Tairua's own sports fishing club. This led to the formation of the Tairua Pauanui Deep Sea Club, which later became affiliated with the New Zealand Sports Fishing Council.

Over the years, the club has grown significantly, both in terms of the number of members and the scope of its activities. In 2019, the club seized the opportunity to purchase a half share of the Tairua Marina building, allowing it to establish modern clubrooms for its members.
