The Aviary at the University of British Columbia, located in the AMS Nest on the UBC Vancouver campus, is a rock climbing gym open to climbers of all levels of experience. Whether you are a seasoned climber or a beginner looking to learn the ropes, The Aviary has something for everyone. With top rope and lead climbing options, as well as a variety of training tools, climbers can challenge themselves and improve their skills.
The Aviary is open to both UBC students and the public. We offer free top rope and lead belay lessons for those looking to learn or refresh their skills. You simply need to leave a $20 deposit to secure your spot, which will be refunded when you attend the lesson. Lessons must be booked in person at the gym, and dates are available on the calendar.
Please note that there is a 7-day waiting period after completing a belay lesson before taking a belay test.
Our gym hours are subject to change, as we are run by volunteers. Be sure to cheque the calendar before coming in for your climbing session. The two-hour blocks on the calendar reflect volunteer shifts, and climbers are encouraged to limit their sessions to two hours to allow others to enjoy the gym.
The Aviary is available for private bookings for groups of up to 12 participants. No climbing experience is necessary, and bookings must be made at least 2 weeks in advance. We also welcome volunteers to join our team and help run the gym smoothly.
