VRI Fencing Club

Welcome to VRI Fencing Club, Melbourne's top sports club for all things fencing! Founded in 1949 by three Hungarian railway workers, who were members of the Victorian Railways Institute, VRI has a rich history of producing top-notch fencers and Olympians. In fact, we hold the distinction of being the most consistent and highest-performing club in Australia's history.

With a supportive and inclusive fencing community, as well as highly skilled coaches, VRI has grown to become Victoria's largest fencing club. We offer a range of structured group classes for both children and adults, catering to beginners all the way through to elite athletes. Private lessons with our experienced coaches are also available.

For children ages 7-11, our Swordplay classes provide a fun introduction to fencing in an environment focused on developing skills rather than just drills. Our Junior Squad, for ages 12-20, offers a structured programme to help young épéeists develop into competitive fencers. We also offer Come & Try sessions for those who want to give fencing a go without committing to a multi-week course.

Our coaching team, led by Olympian Gerry Adams, is highly skilled and teaches the renowned Hungarian methods used by some of the world's best coaches. With coaches like Jonathan Meddings, Darcy MacCuspie, Harriet Moffat, Itay Peer, and guest coach Seva Diachenko, you can be sure you'll receive top-quality instruction.

Fencing not only offers a great physical workout, engaging all major muscle groups and enhancing strength, agility, and endurance, but it also provides numerous other benefits. Joining our inclusive community allows you to forge lasting friendships with like-minded individuals who share your love for the sport. Additionally, fencing is a mental game, challenging you to think fast, make strategic decisions, and improve concentration.
