About

Waitangi Park is a six-hectare urban park located in the heart of Wellington, New Zealand. Situated on the waterfront, the park covers an impressive 30 percent of the waterfront area. It is bounded by Oriental Parade, Cable Street, and Herd Street, making it easily accessible to visitors from all directions.

One of the main highlights of Waitangi Park is its large grassed area, perfect for picnics, outdoor games, or simply relaxing and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. The park also boasts an innovative playground that is sure to captivate the imaginations of children and provide them with hours of fun.

However, what makes Waitangi Park truly unique is its re-created wetland. The park's vegetation and gravels have been carefully designed to philtre and cleanse the waters of the Waitangi Stream, which used to run in an underground storm-water culvert. This creates an environmentally-friendly feature that not only adds beauty to the park but also helps to preserve and protect the local ecosystem.

Accessibility is a key feature of Waitangi Park, as it is a flat park that is easy to navigate for people of all ages and abilities. The park is also dog-friendly, although dogs must be kept on a leash at all times to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors.

The history of Waitangi Park is fascinating, as it was once home to a much larger wetland that was used by Mori for food-gathering, a source of fresh water, and a place to launch waka (traditional Maori canoes). European plans to turn the stream into a canal were halted by the 1855 earthquake, which raised the land by 1. 5 metres. After land reclamation, the stream became part of the underground storm-water system.

Throughout the last century, the park has served various purposes, including housing a morgue, a bus park, and a large incinerator.

Waitangi Park is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Whether you're looking for a place to enjoy a leisurely stroll, engage in outdoor activities, or simply unwind and connect with nature, Waitangi Park has something to offer for everyone. Its central location, rich history, and commitment to sustainability make it a must-visit destination in Wellington.
