Weedons Cricket Club, based in Rolleston, is excited to announce an upcoming local Cricket event that is sure to attract enthusiastic players from all around. With a remarkable growth in the 2019/20 season, this club has surely made its mark in the cricket community.
Last season, Weedons Cricket Club had an impressive 10% increase in the number of teams compared to the previous year, boasting a total of 412 talented players. Among them, we saw 34 Yellow Caps, 300 Junior players, 25 Youth players, and 53 Seniors, making for an exciting mix of experience and skill.
One of the highlights of last season was the introduction of the Yellow Caps program, which replaced the previously popular Have-a-go cricket. This new skills program received positive feedback from players and proved to be a valuable addition to the club's offerings.
Furthermore, Weedons Cricket Club managed to convert two teams to Section 4 for the second half of the season, showcasing their determination and growth mindset. They also made strategic changes to the Youth Cricket program, aligning it with the calendar year to minimise disruptions and create a seamless experience for young cricketers.
The club had the privilege of hosting not one, not two, but three BlackCaps players, including Ross Taylor, BJ Watling, and Neil Wagner, for coaching sessions and an ANZ organised event. This brought immense joy to the junior players who had the opportunity to learn from their heroes while engaging in fun activities.
Behind the scenes, Weedons Cricket Club underwent some structural changes by appointing Janine Grundler as their dedicated administrator and forming a new Junior Committee. These changes have contributed to the smooth operation of the club and have provided a solid foundation for future growth.
Despite the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Weedons Cricket Club managed to keep their season largely intact, with only one game lost at the end. Although prizegiving was affected, the club made every effort to ensure that players received well-deserved certificates, memorable photos, and prestigious trophies once lockdown restrictions were lifted.
Weedons Cricket Club would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to their valued sponsors for their unwavering support. Their contributions have played a vital role in the success and growth of the club, allowing them to provide quality cricket experiences to players of all ages.
So, if you're a passionate cricketer looking to be a part of an inclusive and vibrant cricket club, Weedons Cricket Club is where you need to be.
