Welcome to Widnes Golf Club Limited, a friendly members club located in a scenic parkland setting. The course offers tight tree-lined fairways and fast greens, providing a real test of accuracy for golfers of all levels. Situated less than five minutes away from the town centre, Widnes Golf Club welcomes both golfers and social visitors with a warm and friendly atmosphere.
The club was formed at a meeting in the Town Hall on 12 January 1923, and after some delays, the first 9-hole course was opened on 17 May 1924. The clubhouse was quickly built and occupied within three months, and the foundation of an active and supportive Ladies Section was laid with the inclusion of lady membership from the start.
The nearby Woolton Golf Club played an influential role in the creation of Widnes Golf Club, as two of the main instigators, John Hardman and Dr Sam McCausland, were both members of Woolton. The professional at Woolton also played a part in mapping out the new course on Lower House Farm, with one of his assistants becoming the first professional at Widnes Golf Club.
In 1925, an additional 6 holes were built, and by 1929, the club had a full complement of 18 holes. A tree planting scheme during this time unfortunately did not succeed due to unfavourable atmospheric conditions. The greenkeeper's horse, Dolly, had to be put down as she was deemed unfit for work, resulting in her removal from the Balance Sheet. Her successor, an 8-year-old horse, was also found to be suffering from a cold, and the Council kindly purchased a horse blanket.
The club entered the mechanical age in 1931 with the acquisition of a second-hand tractor. In 1952, the club had to accept a loss of land when some of it was sold for housing by ICI. However, better fortunes came in the 1960s when the closure of the Mersey Golf Club at Fiddlers Ferry brought an influx of new members to Widnes Golf Club. In 1963, the club negotiated with Lancashire County Council for the purchase of adjacent land, resulting in a new course layout that was officially opened in 1967.
By the end of 1967, the club successfully completed the purchase of the freehold from ICI, giving them ownership of their own land. This newfound confidence allowed for extensions and refurbishments to the clubhouse over the following years. Today, the clubhouse offers a relaxing setting with a well-stocked bar, full catering service, and an attractive patio that overlooks the 18th green.
