The course underwent significant changes in 1905 when the legendary J. H. Taylor was commissioned to redesign it into a more traditional 18-hole layout.

Subsequently, in 1925, Dr. Alister Mackenzie was enlisted to expand and enhance the course's features, resulting in the layout we know and enjoy today. The course showcases Mackenzie's signature design, particularly with the unique two-tier greens on holes 8, 9, 12, and 18. The majority of the course was remodelled to incorporate the natural contours of the land, providing a challenging yet fair playing experience for golfers of all skill levels.

Dr. Alister Mackenzie, also known as “the Course Doctor,” was a highly influential figure in the world of golf course architecture. Born in 1870 to Scottish parents in Yorkshire, Mackenzie's design genius earned him international recognition and led to the creation of some of the most prestigious courses worldwide. In addition to Willingdon Golf Club, he also designed courses such as Royal Melbourne in Australia, Buenos Aires in Argentina, Cypress Point and Augusta National in America, and Littlestone, Burnham and Berrow, and Moortown in England.

Mackenzie, who started his career as a medical practitioner, ultimately abandoned his medical practise to fully dedicate himself to golf course architecture. His expertise and passion for the game have left an indelible mark on the sport, and Willingdon Golf Club proudly displays his influence through its two-tier greens.
