About

Maroochydore Senior Rugby League Football Club was formed at the Cotton Tree Oval, or as it was known in 1965, Maroochy Central. A younger and better looking John Redwood started his prestigious Rugby League career in the Under 15's side. The Club folded after the 1966 season and that was the end of Senior Rugby League until a few years later.

In 1972, a few of us were having a cold beer and decided to get the Rugby League going again. A meeting was held at the local real estate office and the first committee was formed consisting of : Doug Trelor as President, Aub Wilkson, Norm Cairns, Brad Claffley, Kevin Wilkes, Bob McKay, Clarrie Maloney and John Redwood.

The Club played their first game in 1973 at the Maroochydore State School and following games at Maroochydore High School. Ian Massie was the first coach and the Zebra Hotel (now Dupoorth Tavern) but known to locals as the Maroochy Hotel was the first sponsor. In 1975 the fledging Club moved to the Wises Road Complex. Fund-raising in those days was a chook and Meat raffle Saturday mornings at the Zebra Hotel.

We pushed a wheel barrow full of groceries (donated by local business's) around Butts Shopping Centre. In 1975 the Maroochydore R. Side won the leadingship. A bloke known as Bob McKay owned a fleet of trucks and t he team all got on the back the next day and drove around with a keg of beer to thank the supporters.

Thing were a little different back then.
