Celestial Wall is a renowned rock climbing destination located in the Glass House Mountains on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia. It is a part of the Tibrogargan crag and offers an incredible climbing experience on a stunning vertical face in a breathtaking, exposed position. The wall stands out with its vibrant orange colour, making it easily identifiable from the carpark.
Although Celestial Wall provides a sport climbing experience, climbers must not forget the inherent risks associated with climbing in this area. It is recommended to bring helmets, prussiks, and a healthy dose of caution. All routes in this sector are bolted with fixed hangers, so a set of 12 quickdraws, along with slings and screwgates, will suffice. While a 60m rope is sufficient for most routes, carrying two ropes allows for easier rappelling from any rap station, should the need arise.
The most straightforward descent is via rappelling down Clemency Wall from halfway house, which can be achieved in three rappels with a 60m rope.
Access to Celestial Wall, like most climbing areas in the Glass House Mountains, is within the Glass House Mountains National Park. Climbers are reminded to respect the environment and the enjoyment of others. Accessing and climbing in this area is a privilege that should be treated as such. The track expansion and fortification work at Ngungun in 2019 is now complete, and the mountain is fully open for climbing.
To reach Celestial Wall, climbers should follow the same approach as the Clemency Wall sector. From the carpark, walk up the track towards the mountain for about 200m until a fork is reached. Take the left branch signposted as Tibrogargan Picnic Area for approximately two minutes or 100m. If you reach the bench, you have gone too far.
Just before walking over a 'gully' paved with large rocks, turn right onto a small but distinct foot track. This track leads to the wall in about eight minutes, specifically to the SE corner of the mountain.
In terms of ethics and safety, climbers are advised that retro-bolting of existing routes is unacceptable. Any new routes should make use of traditional protection where available. Modern climbers have taken great care not to interfere with the historic routes established many decades ago.
For climbers planning a trip to Celestial Wall, it is recommended to check the weather conditions, find suitable accommodation, and refer to guidebooks for further information on routes and climbing in the area.
Celestial Wall offers a truly unique and exhilarating rock climbing experience in the heart of the Glass House Mountains. Climbers of all levels will be captivated by the stunning beauty and challenging routes that this crag has to offer.
