About

Summit Caves, located in the Glass House Mountains on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, offers some of the most adventurous and daring rock climbing experiences in the area. This crag is known for its series of caves that host bold routes, making it a serious climbing area that requires a confident leader.

The Caves at Summit Caves provide climbers with a variety of styles and grades, ranging from 13 to 29, with some harder projects still awaiting completion. The routes here offer overhung roofs, vertical walls, and the challenge of climbing in morning sun. Most of the sport routes can be completed with a 60m rope and 10 quickdraws, making it accessible to climbers of various skill levels.

Access to the Glass House Mountains climbing areas, including Summit Caves, is within the Glass House Mountains National Park. As such, climbers are expected to respect the environment and the enjoyment of others. Access to climbing here is a privilege, not a right. In 2019, the Ngungun track expansion and fortification work was completed, allowing full access to the mountain once again.

To reach Summit Caves, climbers can take various multi-pitches, but the easiest access is through the Caves Route. Instead of topping out on the summit via the chimney pitch, climbers should trend left through the scrub and end up on a small grassy ledge. It is important to be cautious, as any rocks thrown from the summit tend to find their way to this ledge.

The climbers at Summit Caves adhere to a well-established ethic within the Glass House Mountains. Modern climbers who establish new routes have made sure they do not interfere with the historic routes that were established many decades ago. Retro-bolting of existing routes is considered unacceptable, and new routes are expected to utilise traditional protection where available.

At Summit Caves, climbers can expect a thrilling and challenging experience. With its exposed and difficult climbing routes, this crag is not for the faint of heart. Those who climb here will find themselves pushing their limits and enjoying the natural beauty of the Glass House Mountains.
