Maranui Swimming Club, located in Wellington, is a swimming school that provides swimming tuition and coaching to children between the ages of five and eighteen. The club aims to create a non-competitive and fun environment where every child can feel safe, comfortable, and enjoy their time in the water.
At Maranui Swimming Club, they prioritise the highest level of coaching in all aspects of swimming technique development and learning. They strive to make the swimming experience enjoyable for their young swimmers, so they look forward to coming to Club nights.
The club operates in a middle ground between commercial learn-to-swim classes and competitive swimming. They have a family atmosphere and a low-cost approach, thanks to the great contribution of their volunteer coaches.
Club nights at Maranui Swimming Club are held on Friday evenings between 7pm and 8pm at The Aquadome, which is located at Wellington East Girls College. The club hires the entire heated indoor pool complex and divides it into lanes for different skill levels. Club nights occur every Friday during the school term, except for Good Friday.
The club offers a variety of activities during their Friday night programme. They include a mix of event and straight swimming nights to enhance skill training and create interest and personal satisfaction for the swimmers. Additionally, they organise different, fun, or structured events each month, such as fun chocolate fish nights, bring-a-friend night, club championships, swim-a-thon, and costume night, among others.
Swimmers at Maranui Swimming Club are placed in groups based on their age, ability, and personal comfort. The beginners' group, called “Learn to Swim,” is suitable for children between the ages of five (with water confidence) and seven. The main membership of the club comprises seven to sixteen-year-old members with varying abilities. While the club primarily focuses on these age groups, existing members may continue swimming until they are 19 or 20.
The club produces a programme at the beginning of each year, which outlines the activities and non-swimming dates for the year. This programme can be found on the club's announcements or shared calendar.
Swimmers at Maranui Swimming Club progress through a series of coloured “lanes” as their swimming capabilities improve. The coaches assess the abilities of each swimmer and make decisions on when they should progress to the next lane. Each coach tailors their instruction to the varying abilities of the swimmers in their lane.
The club has a range of different lanes, starting from the beginners' lanes in the shallow pool, progressing to lanes with different skill levels and abilities. These include lanes such as Red (Beginners), Orange (Beginners), Yellow, Green, Blue, Aqua, White, and Silver. Each lane has specific learning objectives that the coaches aim to achieve with the swimmers.
Maranui Swimming Club is committed to providing a positive and enjoyable swimming experience for children of all ages and abilities. With their excellent coaching, fun activities, and family atmosphere, they strive to create a love for swimming and foster the development of swimming skills in a safe and supportive environment.
