About

Thurso Golf Club, located at 58. 58 degrees north in Thurso, is the most northerly golf course on the mainland of the United Kingdom. Established in 1893, this tree-lined parkland course offers golfers of all abilities an excellent challenge. With its lush fairways, well-maintained greens, and beautiful whin bushes, golfers can enjoy a picturesque round of golf while taking in magnificent views of the Orkney Islands and the surrounding countryside and hills.

The clubhouse at Thurso Golf Club provides generous changing facilities, a bar, and a lounge that offers all the usual amenities and caters to all tastes. Golfers also have access to an indoor practise area and outdoor practise areas that include a putting area and bunker. For convenience, trolleys, and buggies are available to hire.

Thurso Golf Club has a rich history, with the game of golf being played in Caithness and the north Sutherland coast for over 100 years. Despite the challenging weather conditions often encountered at Thurso, including strong winds and driving rain, the game remains a popular pastime in the area. The club has a large membership and a thriving competition scene throughout the year.

The present course at Thurso Golf Club was established as a 9-hole in 1921 and was extended to 18 holes in 1963. Over 100,000 trees have been planted, giving the course a parkland feel. Due to its hilltop location above Thurso, several holes provide tough tests into a prevailing wind. The signature hole is the 13th, featuring a challenging shot over a burn with heather on the left and rough on the right.

The 15th green offers a breathtaking view of the Pentland Firth, Orkney, and Dunnet Head.

The course itself offers a range of challenging holes. The first hole, sponsored by Waas, is a tough 406-yard par 4 that often plays into a strong wind. With out of bounds on the left and rough on the right, the fairway appears narrower than it is. The second hole, sponsored by Newlands, is a shorter 371-yard par 4 where a straight drive is crucial, as the fairway slopes from right to left.

The third hole, sponsored by Holborn, is a tricky par 3 measuring 186 yards, typically played with wicked crosswinds. The fourth hole, sponsored by Langland, is a 504-yard par 5 that requires strategic thinking.

Whether you are a member or a visitor, Thurso Golf Club offers a challenging and scenic golfing experience. With its rich history and beautiful course, this club is a must-visit for any golf enthusiast.
