The Women's Athletic Club, known as the Preston-Reservoir Women's Athletic Club, was founded in 1957 and merged with the men's club in 1986 to form the present-day club.
Throughout its history, the club has had great success, boasting large membership numbers and achieving prestigious accolades. In the 1960s and early 1980s, it was one of the largest clubs in Australia, with around 175–200 members. The men's team even won the A grade topship in 1960. Additionally, numerous club members have represented Australia in the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, including Lisa Jane Weightman, who competed in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
